Children and Lamplight
How information about your child is handled.
The parent holds the account
- Lamplight is an app for adults. You confirm you are 18 or older and the parent or guardian before you sign in.
- There are no child accounts. A child never signs in, never types, and never talks to the app.
- The child's part is to listen. While a story plays, the microphone is off, nothing is recorded, and nothing about the listening is tracked.
- There is no chat, no character the child can talk to, and no illustrations or games. Those are not planned.
What we store about a child
Everything we hold about a child is entered by you. We store:
- A nickname. We suggest a first name or a pet name, not a full name.
- An age band: 2 to 3, 4 to 5, 6 to 8, or 9 and up. Not a birth date.
- Likes, and things to leave out of stories.
- People, pets, and toys who may appear in stories, each with a name and a relation.
- What the child is working on: up to two topics from a fixed menu or written by you, and an optional note for tonight only, which is deleted after 30 days.
- The stories made for that child.
We do not collect a child's voice, photo, location, birth date, school, or address. The free-text fields ask you not to enter last names, schools, or addresses, and the app scrubs them if you do.
What leaves our systems
- The story model (Anthropic) receives the age band, likes, leave-outs, and topic. It never receives the nickname or any name you entered; each is replaced with a placeholder before sending and put back after.
- The voice company (Inworld) receives the finished story text so it can read it aloud. That text includes the nickname and names, because the voice has to say them.
- No one else receives anything about your child. We do not sell it, and we do not use it for advertising or to train models.
How stories are kept suitable
- Each story is written to a fixed set of rules for its age band, then checked by a second AI model against those rules before you see it.
- You read the summary, and the full text if you want, before the story is read aloud. Nothing plays until you choose.
- Your leave-out list is honoured, and the app blocks a conflict (for example, a family dog listed as a character when dogs are on the leave-out list).
- If a story is wrong for your child, Report it from the player. A person reads every report.
Deleting a child's information
Delete a child profile from the profile screen; its stories, topics, and characters go with it. Or delete everything from Settings. The delete account page has the details.
A note on children's privacy law
Federal children's privacy law covers information collected online from a child. Lamplight collects nothing from a child; the information is given by you, the parent, about your child, and we keep the app that way on purpose. We still handle it with the care in the privacy policy. [confirm wording with a lawyer; the spec cites FTC COPPA FAQ A.8 for this position]
